Pop sensation Taylor Swift sold a Dassault Falcon 900, one of her private jets when a student tracking her travels was sued.
The sale of Swift’s plane coincides with her legal team sending cease-and-desist letters to Jack Sweeney, a college student in Florida who has been tracking celebrities’ private flights, including Swift’s.
Swift’s attorneys claim that the student’s actions risked her safety and privacy.
Meanwhile, Swift has owned the jet since 2009. It was sold on January 30 and is currently registered to a business in Missouri as confirmed by The Federal Aviation Authority’s website. The sale’s financial conditions are still unknown.
The Daily Mail stated that although Swift allegedly paid $40 million for the aircraft in 2011, its current estimated second-hand value is $7 million.
She still owns the larger Dassault Falcon 7X, her main means of transportation throughout her Eras Tour and originally valued at approximately $54 million.
Why Was Taylor’s Swift Private Jet Tracked?
Swift’s legal team has accused Sweeney of “stalking and harassing behavior” as he uses open-source flight monitoring data and his Instagram account to share real-time updates on celebrity flights.
In the letter, Swift’s lawyers noted that there is “no legitimate interest in or public need for this information, other than to stalk, harass, and exert dominion and control.”
After receiving the legal letter in December, the student’s account was removed temporarily by Elon Musk in 2022, citing safety concerns for himself and his family as well as a violation of the platform’s rules of service related to the sharing of real-time location data.
Even with the gravity of the accusations, Sweeney insists that his acts are harmless and just serve to increase public awareness of the environmental effects of celebrity travel.
In his words as reported by Daily Mail, “I think it’s important to note that nowhere do I intend for harm. I actually think Swift has some good songs. I believe in transparency and public information.”
Sweeney also boasted of his social media platforms that track the jets of other prominent people like Kim Kardashian, Donald Trump, and the rest.
Is Taylor Swift’s Private Jet Harming the Environment?
On the flip side, Taylor is coming under a lot of heat for flying jets that emit carbon.
Swift is one of the top flyers in 2022 in terms of carbon footprint, and her excessive use of private aircraft has drawn criticism in recent months.
A report claims that during 170 flights, Swift’s aircraft emitted about 8,293.54 tons of CO2 emissions. The shortest flight took place in just 36 minutes, traveling from Missouri to Nashville.
Although Taylor is said to have bought carbon credits to make up for the environmental damage caused by her frequent use of airplanes, this hasn’t stopped the continuous discussion about the environmental effects and morality of celebrity travel, either.
Meanwhile, according to Daily Mail, Swift just made her largest flight to date, traveling 4,151 gallons of fuel from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Kansas City, at an estimated cost of $23,250.
Fans are watching Swift’s every move this weekend to see if she will be traveling directly from her fourth and final performance at Japan’s Tokyo Dome on Saturday to Las Vegas, where the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
