Barbenheimer: Barbie breaks records at $300M while Oppenheimer stays at $165M

Barbenheimer! Once the two eagerly awaited pictures were released at the same time this weekend, Barbenheimer made some major money at the box office. Upon its tandem release on July 21, Barbie and Oppenheimer brought in an estimated $465 million in ticket sales.

According to Deadline, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, 33, was the weekend’s top earner with domestic ticket sales of $155 million and international sales of more than $300 million. These figures make it the largest movie premiere of 2023.

Barbenheimer: The major differences

The legendary doll-themed movie directed by Greta Gerwig, 39, had the second-largest debut ever. At $357 million, only Avengers: Endgame in 2019 performed better.

The 47-year-old actor Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer, which earned over $80.5 million domestically and $165 million internationally, came in second.

Both films are drawing large crowds of viewers, and many choose to see both as a double feature.

Barbie swiftly surpasses Super Mario Bros.’s $146.4 million in initial sales to become the largest opening of 2023. The Barbenheimer weekend becomes the largest box office weekend of all time with a total earning of a whopping $465 million.

Barbie also had the most opening weekend revenue in 2023 with $70.5 million in ticket sales on the very first day, followed by Oppenheimer with $33 million.
