Oppenheimer or Barbie, which is winning? ‘Oppenheimer’ is projected to make half as much money as ‘Barbie. Nonetheless, despite a lackluster film year, people seem to be interested in the clash.
Can we all just take a minute to step back and laugh about how incredibly ridiculous the whole Barbenheimer thing is in the first place? These two massive releases, which in reality have nothing to do with one another, will always be associated in the minds of people throughout the world. There are one billion memes. It’s a day that will be remembered quite as vividly as Barbie herself—okay, maybe not quite as vividly as the Manhattan Project, but you get the idea.
It might be easy to forget that these are “double features” with all the buzz around them.
Barbie vs Oppenheimer: The reality
Barbie is anticipated to earn up to $110 million at the box office this weekend, more than twice as much as Oppenheimer, which is anticipated to earn $50 million. Apparently, a lot of people felt this way.
This weekend’s top two box office performers are “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” according to Turner Classic Movies presenter Dave Karger. Although they are technically rivals, their target demographics are vastly dissimilar, and the Barbenheimer buzz appears to be benefiting both projects.
The movie “Barbie” lasts slightly under two hours. The length of “Oppenheimer” makes it difficult for cinemas to schedule as many showings as possible over the course of a weekend. “Oppenheimer,” however, has the benefit of playing on most of North America’s large-format screens, which come with a ticket surcharge of up to $12 in New York.
Although dominating the world, Barbie has never had her own high-profile motion picture. The 2005 book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin served as the basis for the film “Oppenheimer.”
Major cinema stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling appear in “Barbie,” and Cillian Murphy plays the main character in “Oppenheimer.”
