Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will travel to Nigeria in May 2024 after the visit of Prince Harry to London for the 10th-anniversary celebrations of the Invictus Games. This is coming after rumors about a possible reunion between Meghan and the royal family in London.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will engage in Invictus Games-related activities during their visit to Nigeria including meetings with military officers and cultural events.
The Nigerian defense ministry has shown their “honor and delight” with the announcement, with Brigadier General Tukur Gusau saying that the visit would seal the country’s relationship with the Games even as it opens the door for possible hosting opportunities in the future
This journey is not only important to Prince Harry but also for Meghan Markle. Interestingly, last year, in a podcast called Archetypes, she said that her genealogy test had shown that she is 43% Nigerian. These findings, therefore, sparked her will to know her past, and this journey served as an opportunity to bond with her roots.
The particular dates for the Prince’s visit to Nigeria are still unknown, but he definitely will be at the Invictus Games 10th-anniversary service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8th. It is also reported that no senior royals will be present with him at this British event.
What is the Significance of the Sussexes’ Trip?
For the Sussexes, this journey to Nigeria is a continuation of their work for the Invictus Games and an opportunity for Meghan to explore her heritage. This trip also holds significance for Prince Harry as an opportunity to pay tribute to the memory of his late mother, Princess Diana.
When Princess Diana came to Nigeria in 1990, she left a great mark. She showed great compassion for the patients she treated, and this was a reflection of her dedication to humanitarian causes.
Prince Harry during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany, had already acknowledged Meghan’s Nigerian heritage. He even made a joke suggesting that the Games could become “a little bit more competitive this year” due to her newfound bond with the country.
After the Sussexes’ relocation to the United States, they haven’t been traveling much for many overseas trips. They went to Jamaica for a film premiere, and Prince Harry went back to London for a brief moment after his father was diagnosed with cancer in February.
The couple has also attended the recent Invictus Games in Canada. Nevertheless, this journey to Nigeria is the Duchess’s first outside the United States since the funeral of the Queen that took place in September 2022.
