With an estimated $39 million in its opening weekend, Wonka is leading the Box Office. Wonka is a recent cinematic adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This movie directed by Paul King of “Paddington” and “Paddington 2,” stars Chalamet as a young Wonka who is attempting to build a candy business.
Wonka, which was the first major Hollywood production to open after the end of the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike, cost over $125 million to create and was shown at 4,203 venues. At the foreign box office, where the movie debuted at $43 million last weekend, it is already making waves.
With an additional $53.6 million from 77 markets, the movie’s global total now stands at $150 million.
What Other Movies are Competing With Wonka at the Box Office?
Wonka holding onto a firm spot at the Box Office is quite challenging. This is because we have movies like The Hunger Games at number two.
In its fifth week of play, the film is expected to gross $6.1 million, bringing in a total of $145 million domestically and $300 million internationally.
The Boy and the Heron dropped to the third position over the weekend, taking in $5.1 million from 2,325 locations. With a $13 million opening weekend take, the animated fantasy epic led the box office and has now made $23.1 million. When The Boy and the Heron was released earlier this year in Japan and other foreign markets, ticket sales worldwide topped $100 million.
Godzilla Minus One, a science fiction thriller that made an estimated $4.8 million, came in fourth place. It has raised $30 million in North America and $65.4 million worldwide in just two weeks.
With $4 million, Trolls Band Together from Universal and DreamWorks Animation ranked fifth.
The jukebox musical has made $183 million worldwide and $88.6 million in North America in just five weeks since its release.
Meanwhile, in the tenth position, Poor Things made an estimated $1.3 million and $183 million in its second week of restricted distribution globally.
